JCPA Leads Arizona-Mexico Border Trip for Jewish
Community Relations Leaders

WHAT: 

To break through the politicized and polarized discussion on immigration, JCPA is leading a 23-person delegation on a fact-finding trip to the Arizona-Mexico border to examine U.S. policies and witness conditions facing migrants and asylum seekers firsthand.

Highlights

• Attend an Operation Streamline hearing, a federal program that fast-tracks the deportation of migrants caught between Ports of Entry
• Meet with a Border Patrol Official
• Visit the Mexican Consulate to discuss their role in transnational migration matters
• Walk along Arizona-Mexico border fence, accompanied by Todd Miller, author of Empire of Borders: The Expansion of the US Border Around the World
• Tour local shelters and meet with advocacy groups and migrants on both sides of the border
• Hear from those in the faith community who are coordinating the humanitarian response.

WHY:

JCPA’s three-day trip to the Arizona-Mexico border will examine U.S. policies and conditions facing migrants and asylum seekers from Central America and Mexico. The aim is for participants to better understand the situation at the border in order to more effectively advocate for sound immigration policies.

JCPA has been a strong advocate on immigration since the 1950s, and is deeply concerned about immigrant detention, the “zero tolerance” family separation policy, and the denial of due process to those in our custody or seeking our protection.

WHO:

The JCPA trip includes 23 people representing 12 states and Washington, D.C. States include Arizona, California, Kentucky, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

JCPA is the national network hub of 125 Jewish Community Relations Councils around the country and 17 national Jewish agencies. JCPA convenes these groups to tackle pressing issues of the day.  JCPA’s mandate is to advocate for Jewish concerns and build a just and pluralistic America and support human rights around the world.
