“The Department of Homeland Security doesn’t just need a new director; it needs an entirely new direction.
“From increasingly-deadly unconstitutional immigration enforcement — rooted in dehumanizing and dangerous conspiracy theories — to unconscionable delays and politicization of vital security funding for synagogues and other institutions, DHS requires true accountability and transparency.
“Secretary Mullin now has an opportunity to move in that direction. And, regardless, Congress has an obligation to use its funding and oversight authorities to hold the agency to account — starting by separating vital security and other programs from ICE and CBP funding, so our communities’ safety is no longer contingent on continued funds for unaccountable immigration enforcement.”
