Washington, D.C. – An urgent international response is needed to address the crisis of migrants trying to reach safe haven in Europe. Where a single human being suffers, we all suffer. Thousands of individuals are fleeing from violent and dangerous situations in parts of Africa and Asia. Syria is now the top source of forcibly displaced persons in the world. The humanitarian emergency there has overwhelmed Syria’s neighbors, especially Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan. A seemingly unending flow of defenseless men, women and children are now desperately trying to reach Europe. The international community must take action not only to contend with the dire conditions on Europe’s land and sea borders but also to stem the human carnage that is a result of the brutal civil war in Syria.
